In the context of urbanization and industrialization, Hong Kong has evolved from a primitive fishing village to a cosmopolitan city. Influenced by eastern and western cultures, Hong Kong exemplifies to the world successes created in this tiny city where “East Meets West”. Life in Hong Kong is competitive, tense and fast-paced. To enrich the quality of life of the community, the Hong Kong Government provides a wide range of public recreation and sports facilities and organizes numerous recreation and sports activities for public participation to promote an active life style. To cater for the growing demand, the private sector has also contributed a lot in the leisure services industry. International sports events are organized throughout the year which include the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens, Hong Kong Marathon, Hong Kong Golf Open, Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships and Hong Kong International Boat Races, to name a few Mega sports events like the Equestrian events of 2008 Olympic Games and 2009 East Asian Games were also held in Hong Kong. Hong Kong has gained the name as “Asia’s Events Capital”.
The growing leisure industry has created a great demand for professionals in sports and recreation management. The Hong Kong Recreation Management Association (HKRMA) is a professional organization which aims to improve the quality of recreation and sports managers; raise public awareness of the recreation and sports profession; promote professional management of recreation and sports facilities and organization of sports and recreation events.
HKRMA was set up and registered in 1983. The inauguration ceremony was officiated by the Honourable Dennis Bray, Acting Governor of Hong Kong Government on 4th July 1984. Over the years, HKRMA has organized numerous training programmes, talks, seminars and study tours to enhance the knowledge and skills of recreation and sports professionals. HKRMA is honoured to host the World Congress of International Federation of Parks and Recreation Administration in 1992 and 2010.
HKRMA has launched the Timothy Tsun Ting Fok Scholastic Awards since 2004 to recognize outstanding students of tertiary institutions pursuing studies in the recreation and sports field in Hong Kong. The Scholastic Awards provide an excellent opportunity for the students selected to broaden their knowledge, experience and network to further develop their potential.
Every two years, HKRMA organizes the Residential Clubhouse Management Awards Competition to raise the awareness of the property management companies on the management of residents’ clubhouse; to give due recognition to the outstanding clubhouse managers; and to provide a platform for property management companies and clubhouse managers to share their experiences.
To keep members abreast of the latest development in the recreation and sports field, HKRMA publishes a newsletter quarterly which is posted on this website. HKRMA also publishes an annual journal with academic articles contributed by local and oversea recreation and sports professionals and academics.
Since its inception, HKRMA has achieved a steady growth with increasing number of members coming from recreation and sports managers working in the public and private sectors; university staff and students in the related field. |
